RV Decorating Ideas: Top Ways to Make Your RV Feel Like a Home
Looking to spruce up your RV? Check out our top 15 ways to decorate your home on wheels..
Whether you’re on the road full time or taking weekend trips to your local hot spots, adding some decor to your RV is great way to bring the comforts of home with you on the road.
However, there are a couple things to keep in mind when brainstorming how to decorate, such as, weight, functionality, and affordability. Because RVs cruise down the road at 50 - 60 mph hitting every bump and crack all while maintaining the maximum weight capacity, it’s important not to bring the most expensive and heavy decor with you.
Mike & I have been traveling and working seasonally all over the US for the past 2 years and now that we are onto our 2nd travel trailer, I’ve definitely found my favorite simple, affordable, and functional ways to decorate a home on wheels.

#1. WALL SCONCES
Light weight wooden wall sconces work great in RV’s because they’re easy to put together, does minimal damage to your walls, and doesn’t have to be managed every time you hit the road. You can add plants, candles, or art work to your sconces to really brighten up an area.
Most wall sconces online come with screws to put into the wall but we found using a couple of heavy duty command strips holds them to the wall just as well. So if you aren’t looking to add any holes to your RV, you definitely don’t need to.
TIP | When buying sconces online, check the weight on the listing to make sure they don’t weigh more than a pound or 2.
#2. FAKE PLANTS
Plants can add so much relaxation and comfort to a space and fake ones work great in an RV. They add color and decor for an empty wall and are typically light weight. We got this pack of 3 Fake Potted Eucalyptus Plants that we commanded to our wall sconces and placed rechargeable tea lights in for even more ambiance and cozy lighting.
#3. AMBIENT LIGHTING
String lights are a great way to brighten up a space with some calm and colorful lighting. These Color Changing String Lights are 16.5 feet in length and can change color making it great for the holidays.
String lights go great around a kitchen island, over a doorway or above a couch. We use Commands Indoor Mini Light Clips for an easy and non damaging way to keep them up. The command clips also do a good job of keeping these lights up when we travel so we don’t have to continuously put them up every time we move.
#4. WORLD/ US MAP
When you get an RV you’ve got to get a map to put up somewhere. A map is an inspirational and fun way to sit and plan an epic summer road trip or create a bucket list of all the places you’d like to visit.
We found this great US map that includes National Parks and other top destinations on Etsy. We also have an awesome World Map that we keep in our spare room. It’s massive and really makes our home feel like an adventure vehicle. And as with everything else in our RV, we use Command Strips to attach the maps to the wall.
#5. HANGING MAGNETIC FRAME
A simple and easy way to hang some of your favorite posters or photos you taken on your trip is with a Hanging Magnetic Wooden Frame. We got these to hang some of our Disney posters from when we lived in Orlando and we love the simple look of it. No plastic or bulky parts. Just connect the two wooden pieces to the top and bottom of your poster and that’s it! Even better we use a Command Hook to hang it on the wall and it works perfectly.
TIP | We do take the frames down when we travel so they don’t swing and chip the walls when we’re driving.
#6. NATIONAL PARK DECOR
If you have an RV there’s a good chance you’ll be exploring some national parks at some point. There are so many cool postcards & posters it’s bound to incite more adventure. I love this National Park Postcard Pack that has colorful and vibrant art of all 63 national parks. They also hang easily with a Command Strip.
#7. DIY CURTAINS
If you are looking for a simple way to make a big impact in your RV, try adding some curtains. Curtains can completely transform the look & feel of a room by covering the stock blinds with your own color and style.
They also help block out excess light and heat which can be very helpful if you are traveling in the summer or to Alaska.
We created our own curtains using Turkish towels, metal clips, command hooks, and curtain rods that you can read all about here, DIY RV Curtains No Sewing or Drilling.
#8. OTTOMAN
An ottoman is not only a versatile item to have in your home, it also works extremely well in an RV. Storage for shoes, dog food, extra kitchen items, step stool, or just an extra place to sit.
We have a small one that we keep by our bed to hold our shoes and use it to help the dogs get on & off the bed. We also put one in our spare room and use it as a reading nook.
#9. THROW PILLOWS
We recently removed the couch that came in our RV and built our own DIY Couch. We bought extra large pillows inserts & cases to make a nice cozy couch area. You can add your pillow case of choice to match with the aesthetic of your RV. We bought a couple packs of Utopia Bedding Throw Pillows in a large size ( 28in X 28in ) and 26 in x 26in Linen Covers in Peacock Blue and Purplish Red.
#10. PEEL & STICK WALLPAPER
For a simple and easily way to spice up the walls without the hassle of painting, try Peel N Stick Wallpaper. There are tons of cute patterns and styles to decorate your bathroom, living space, or kitchen. Our favorite is the Shiplap Peel N Stick.
We put some peel & stick on our cabinets and love the beachy theme the color brings out. Make sure to prep the area according to the instructions and then simply peel and stick the wallpaper to your desired walls & cabinets.
#11. DIGITAL PHOTO FRAME
Another great way to showcase your adventures is with digital photo frame. It’s a great way to see all your photos that would otherwise be on your computer or in a photo album.
Simply transfer whatever photos you choose on a USB drive and insert it in the photo frame to see your photos on a slideshow. Most plug into the wall with a USB or regular wall outlet. Small, light weight, and can be easily stored away on travel days.
#12. WALL ORGANIZER
Wall Organizers are a great way to store keys, wallets, & any papers you receive as you travel around the country. Most wall organizers will have a backing to screw into the wall, however, we stick about 6 heavy duty command strips on the back instead and it stays up nice and firm.
Not only is this a great way to add some decor to your RV, it makes life so much easier when you have a set place to store your important daily items. Make sure to measure your wall space before purchasing your organizer to ensure it will fit and be functional.
#13. DINETTE CUSHION COVERS
This is one of my favorite decorating ideas i’ve found since getting our new Grand Design 3210 BH. The original dinette cushion covers are a grey color and absorb the cold in the room pretty easily which led me to constantly bring a blanket over to sit at the table.
Not wanting to start a sewing project, I started to browse Amazon and found these adorable RV Dinette Cushion Covers in my favorite ocean blue color. Simple, easy, and machine washable. Make sure to measure your cushions before ordering to ensure the covers will fit.
#14. FLOOR RUG
Another cozy feature to add to any RV is a floor rug. This is a easy way to not only put your style into your RV but to also add comfort if you have pets or really cold temperatures.
We personally love a rug that you can vacuum easily or throw in the wash on laundry day. This can add another touch of that homey feel with you while you're out on the road.
#15. MAGNET BOARD
Another great way to showcase some of the souvenirs you’ve collected on your trips is with a magnet board. These are available in varies sizes and attach to the wall easily with couple heavy duty command strips. This is a fun way for kids to start their own souvenir collection to put in their room or if your fridge isn’t magnetic ( like ours ).
