After leaving the amazing area of Tallulah Falls, we made it to our next place of exploration, Helen Georgia. Continuing on our bucket list adventures in North Georgia we stopped at the Brasstown Bald, also known as the highest point in Georgia.
We spent the afternoon exploring the area with our dogs and had the best time enjoying the views. If you have an afternoon to spare we think a visit to the Brasstown Bald is definitely worth a stop!
ABOUT BRASSTOWN BALD
The Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the state of Georgia and is a great family & pet friendly adventure in the North Georgia Mountains. The mountain sits at 4,784 feet above sea level and provides stunning 360 views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. On a clear day you can see as far as North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee! At the top, you can find an observation deck, visitor center, museum, as well as, several hiking trails to explore.
ENTRANCE FEE
$8 per person for ages 16 and up which includes the optional shuttle service to the observation deck.
HOURS OF OPERATION
Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
PET POLICY
Pets must be leashed at all times and no longer than 6 feet in length. They are allowed on the Summit Trail, observation deck, and picnic areas. They aren’t allowed inside any buildings.
GETTING THERE
The Brasstown Bald is located along the Russell Scenic Highway in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Northern Georgia. This 40 mile stretch of road showcases some of the best hiking trails, waterfalls, and scenic views North Georgia has to offer. It’s a short drive from the areas popular towns, making this a great day adventure.
Hiawassee - 15 minutes or 12 miles
Blairsville - 20 minutes or 14 miles
Helen - 25 minutes or 17 miles
Young Harris - 20 minutes or 15 miles
SUMMIT TRAIL
To get to the top of the bald take the steep 0.5 mile Summit Trail or ride the shuttle service from the parking lot. Once you’ve made it to the top walk around the observation deck and visit the 8,000 square foot Brasstown Bald Visitor Center to learn about the history and geology of the area. We spent quite a bit of time up here reading all the plaques and taking in the views from every corner.
In addition to the 0.5 mile Brasstown Bald Summit Trail there are 3 additional trails to explore from the parking lot.
Arkaquah Foot Trail: 5.5 miles
Jacks Knob Foot Trail: 4.5 miles
Wagon Train Foot Trail: 5.8 miles
