Bell Mountain Park Overview & History
Bell Mountain Park sits high above Hiawassee, Georgia, offering one of the most dramatic summit overlooks in the North Georgia mountains. The park is known for its steep, winding drive, exposed rock slabs, and sweeping views over Lake Chatuge and the Blue Ridge range. At the top, visitors find a multi‑level observation deck that makes it easy to take in the 360‑degree scenery — from layered ridgelines to the quiet valleys surrounding Hiawassee. Despite its rugged appearance, Bell Mountain is one of the most accessible viewpoints in the region, drawing travelers, photographers, and sunset‑chasers year‑round.
The mountain’s history is a blend of natural beauty and local culture. For decades, Bell Mountain was privately owned, and the summit was a popular hangout spot for locals who hiked or drove up the rough road to enjoy the view. The exposed rock slabs became known for their colorful graffiti — a tradition that still continues today and has become part of the mountain’s identity. In 2015, Towns County purchased the land to preserve the area and improve public access, adding the wooden observation deck and maintaining the steep road that leads to the top. Today, Bell Mountain Park is a protected scenic overlook, offering visitors a mix of wild mountain terrain, local history, and some of the best panoramic views in North Georgia.
Entrance Fee — Free. Bell Mountain Park does not charge admission or parking fees.
Hours — Open daily, sunrise to sunset. The road is gated at night, so plan visits during daylight.
Pet Policy — Dogs are allowed on leash. The summit platform is dog‑friendly, but keep pets close due to steep drop-offs and open edges.
GETTING TO BELL MOUNTAIN PARK
Bell Mountain Park is located just outside the town of Hiawassee in Northern Georgia. To get to Bell Mountain Park drive the steep 1.5 miles up Shake Rag Rd. and park at the Hal Harrin Overlook.
WARNING: Drive with caution. This road is VERY steep.
Average Grade 12.7% | Highest Grade 21.5%
The drive up to this park might not be for everyone. We were in a Ram 1500 and there were moments it felt like we were on a roller coaster going straight up. A bit frightening but it’s doable with some confidence.
We parked right before the sign and walked the rest of the way. At the top we saw a Tesla, Jeep, and several Sedans.
Once you make it to the top you’ll notice graffiti covering almost everything. It wasn’t something we particularly thought looked nice but it’s something the park allows.
There are two observation decks to take in the amazing views. The first one is a fenced in wheel chair accessible platform with great views of Hiawassee.
The second observation deck is located at the top of a set wooden stairs with plenty of spots to enjoy the views.
From here you get 360 degree views of the North Georgia Mountains and the town of Hiawassee. The second observation deck was a favorite as the views are unbeatable and our dogs loved it.
