7 Beautiful Places to Visit in North Georgia

Take a tour through North Georgia's stunning scenery & unique geological features with this mini guide. Featuring 7 beautiful places to visit in North Georgia.

After leaving North Carolina we made our way into North Georgia where we would be spending time for the holidays. During our 3 week stay we visited some of Georgia’s most breathtaking state parks, unbelievable hiking trails, charming small towns, and incredible views. It’s diverse climate makes it a great place to visit during any season.

The North Georgia area spans all the way from the Atlanta Metropolitan Area to the far Northwest and Northeast corners of the state. It’s surrounded by breathtaking mountains and valleys with many steep and curvy roads. Some our most stressful drives towing our RV have been in the North Georgia Mountains. It contains the highest of Georgia’s Appalachian Mountains and includes the highest point in the state known as the Brasstown Bald.

Today in the Northeastern part of Georgia tourism sustains the local economy with tons of distilleries, breweries, shops, and restaurants to explore. It’s home to many important historic events such as the American Civil War Battles of Lookout Mountain and the Battle of Chickamauga. Whether you have just one day or a couple days to spare, North Georgia is a great place to visit.

#1. THE HIGHEST POINT IN GEORIGA

Travel Guide:  VISITING THE HIGHEST POINT (BRASSTOWN BALD)

The highest point in Georgia, also known as the Brasstown Bald, is a great family and pet friendly adventure in the North Georgia Mountains. It sits at 4,784 feet above sea level and provides stunning 360 views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

On a clear day you can see as far as North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee! We spent the afternoon exploring the area with our dogs and were blown away by how incredible the views are.

#3. VOGEL STATE PARK

Vogel State Park is the second oldest park in Georgia and in our opinion one of the best. It sits at the base of Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest and has tons of hiking, kayaking and mountain biking. Be sure to stop in the adorable town of Blairsville located just 15 minutes north of Vogel State Park. Grab a drink at Cabin Coffee Co. and check out all the cute local shops.

#4. UNICOI STATE PARK & LODGE

Unicoi State Park & Lodge is centered around the gorgeous Lake Unicoi and is known for its numerous outdoor activities. Zipline over Lake Unicoi, have a picnic at Unicoi Beach, take the beautiful Lake Trail around Lake Unicoi, or spend the night in one of their Historic Barrel Cabins. Unicoi State Park is also a short 10 minute drive from the German themed town of Helen.

Tallulah Gorge State Park is home to one of the most breathtaking canyons in the Eastern U.S. Its canyons span nearly 2 miles long and 1,000 feet deep! You can cross the 80 foot swinging bridge or hike down to the canyon floor and explore all the waterfalls that made this canyon what it is today.

#6. CLOUDLAND CANYON STATE PARK

Cloudland Canyon State Park is one of Georgia’s largest and most scenic state parks. The park is known for its 1,000 ft. deep canyon and roaring waterfalls. Some of the most popular things to do at Cloudland Canyon State Park is hike the West Rim Trail, the Overlook Trail, and Cherokee Falls.

#7. ROCK CITY GARDENS

Rock City Gardens is located on Lookout Mountain in Northwest Georgia and is known for its ancient rock formations, lush gardens, and breathtaking views. We highly recommend visiting in the Fall season if you can. The colorful leaves, cool weather, and sunny skies made the walk through Rock City absolutely magical. Winter is also a great time to visit as they have their “Enchanted Garden of Lights” evening garden walk.
